The goal of this clause is to evaluate the hardware architecture of the item against the requirements for fault handling according to the hardware architectural metrics.

This clause uses two hardware architectural metrics:

  • Single Point Fault Metric
  • Latent Fault Metric

The scope of these metrics are limited to:

  • Safety related electric and electrical hardware parts
  • In case of an electro-mechanical part, only the electrical failure is included

Note: Multiple point faults with a higher magnitude than two can be excluded from the calculation unless they appear to be relevant in the Technical Safety Concept.

Prerequisites:

  • Hardware Safety Requirements Specification
  • Hardware Design Specification
  • Hardware Safety Analysis Report

Work products:

  • Analysis of the effectiveness of the architecture of the item to cope with the random hardware failures
  • Review report of evaluation of effectiveness of the architecture of the item to cope with the random hardware failures
